3. Things to Do and See at Sukamade Turtle Beach

Turtle Nesting Season:

  • Witness Turtle Nesting: Sukamade is one of the best places in Indonesia to observe turtles nesting. During nesting season, green sea turtles and olive ridley turtles come ashore at night (usually between 8:00 PM and midnight) to lay their eggs in the sand. This process is awe-inspiring to watch, and you’ll be guided by park rangers to witness this amazing event while ensuring minimal disturbance to the turtles.
  • Hatchlings Release: If you’re lucky, you might also witness the hatchlings emerging from the sand. The rangers often assist in safely releasing baby turtles into the sea, an experience that’s both moving and memorable.

Turtle Conservation Program:

  • Sukamade Turtle Beach is a key site for turtle conservation. The park rangers monitor the turtles and protect the nests, helping to maintain the population. Visitors can learn about the ongoing conservation efforts, including the collection of turtle eggs for incubation and their eventual release into the wild.
  • You can also participate in releasing hatchlings, where visitors are allowed to release baby turtles into the ocean under the guidance of rangers. This experience can be very rewarding for those interested in wildlife conservation.

Exploring the Surrounding Nature:

  • Meru Betiri National Park: The park is a haven for biodiversity, with tropical rainforests, waterfalls, and a wide range of wildlife. If you’re an eco-tourist, you can take short treks through the park, which is home to animals like leopards, javanese tigers (rarely seen), wild boar, and various monkeys.
  • Wildlife Watching: Sukamade is a great place to spot local wildlife, including macaques, civet cats, hornbills, and other bird species. The surrounding rainforest offers diverse ecosystems that are perfect for nature enthusiasts.
  • Waterfalls: The park is home to several beautiful waterfalls, and you can take guided treks to visit some of these natural wonders during your stay.

Beach Activities:

  • Swimming and Relaxing: Sukamade Beach, though famous for turtles, is also a serene and relatively untouched spot to enjoy some time by the sea. The beaches are quiet, with golden sands and clear waters.
  • Photography: The natural beauty of Sukamade Beach and its surrounding landscapes offers many opportunities for stunning photographs—especially during the golden hour before sunset or early morning.

4. Where to Stay:

Sukamade Beach Accommodation:

  • There are a few eco-lodges and guesthouses near the beach that cater to eco-tourists. Accommodations are relatively simple, but they are comfortable and offer a rustic experience in harmony with nature.

5. When to Visit:

  • Best time to visit: May to October, as this is when turtle nesting is at its peak. However, Sukamade can be visited throughout the year. The monsoon season (November to March) may make travel more difficult due to rain and rough roads.

  • Respect Wildlife: Always follow the instructions of park rangers to ensure minimal impact on the turtles. Avoid using bright lights or making loud noises when watching turtles.
  • Bring Cash: Not all places in Sukamade accept credit cards, so bring cash for accommodation, entrance fees, and other expenses.
