The Ijen Volcano, located on the island of Java in Indonesia, is a popular and adventurous destination for travelers visiting Bali. A tour to the Ijen Crater from Bali typically involves a multi-step journey, but the experience is definitely worth the effort. Here’s a general of what the Ijen Volcano tour from Bali involves:

1. Departure from Bali:

Most tours to Ijen begin at 7 pm  from Bali. We will picked you up from your hotel in areas like Ubud, Seminyak, or Kuta or other places. The journey to Ijen involves a combination of road travel and a short ferry ride across the Bali Strait to reach Java.

  • Drive to Gilimanuk: The drive from Bali to the port of Gilimanuk (on Bali’s western tip) takes around 3-4 hours.
  • Ferry Crossing to Banyuwangi (Java): From Gilimanuk, we will take a ferry (about 1 hour) to Banyuwangi, the nearest town on the east coast of Java.
  • Drive to Ijen: Once you arrive in Banyuwangi, the drive to the Ijen Crater takes about another 1.5 hours.

2. The Ijen Crater Hike:

The hike to the top of the Ijen Crater typically starts in the early hours of the morning, around 2 AM to 3 AM, in order to reach the crater by sunrise. This is because the blue fire, which is one of the main attractions of the Ijen Volcano, is most visible during the early morning hours.

  • Difficulty Level: The hike is moderately challenging. It is a 3 to 4 km walk uphill with a steep incline, but it is manageable for most travelers with average fitness levels.
  • Blue Fire: One of the most unique phenomena at Ijen is the “blue fire,” which is caused by the combustion of sulfuric gases. The blue flames are most visible in the dark before dawn, creating an otherworldly, glowing scene.
  • Sulfur Mining: During the hike, you’ll also pass sulfur miners who work in the crater, carrying heavy baskets of sulfur up the mountain. This gives you a real sense of the harsh conditions under which people work in the area.

3. Sunrise at the Crater:

After experiencing the blue fire, most tours continue to the top of the crater to witness a stunning sunrise over the Ijen Crater lake, which is the largest acidic lake in the world. The turquoise-colored lake, surrounded by sulfur deposits, creates a breathtaking landscape.

4. Return Journey:

After exploring the crater and taking in the views, the hike back down is much easier. The total hike usually takes around 3-4 hours. Once back in Banyuwangi, you can have breakfast and then begin the journey back to Bali, which involves retracing the same route (ferry, drive back to Bali) and typically takes most of the day.

Best Time to Visit Ijen Volcano:

  • Dry Season (May to October): This is the best time to visit, as the trails are less muddy, and the visibility is clearer, offering the best views of the blue fire and crater.
  • Rainy Season (November to April): While you can still visit, expect the trails to be slippery and the weather more unpredictable.
